John Paul College
Rotorua|New Zealand
John Paul College, through the hard work of students and dedicated teachers, achieved 16 NCEA Scholarships, including two Outstanding Scholarships. To achieve an NCEA Scholarship, a student has to be in the top 3% of candidates sitting that exam in New Zealand and in the top 1% to achieve an outstanding scholarship.
The Rotorua Energy Trust generously offers 45 scholarships to high schools in Rotorua with a net value of $2000 per annum for a maximum of four years. John Paul College, through their academic results, leadership and community involvement, have secured 17 of these scholarships.
It is with considerable pride that we report to you our interim NCEA results for 2014. They are the result of a dedicated, hardworking staff and talented student body. The pass rates for NCEA were: Level 1 100%; Level 2 100%; Level 3 97.8%.
It is important for you to note that the results compare very favourable with the top academic schools in Auckland and Wellington. Congratulations to all students who were successful in gaining their NCEA Level 1 2 and/or 3.
Six students from schools in the Rotorua area visited the Reserve Bank in Wellington on 10 February as part of the annual Pukaki exchange. Among them was Year 10 student Leah Haumaha Butler. This educational exchange honours the descendants of Ngati Whakaue, in recognition of their tipuna ‘Pukaki’ on the 20 cent coin.
As part of the day’s events, the students also visited Government House for the launch of the Anzac circulating commemorative coin.
At the launch, the students were gifted the first Anzac coins by the Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, GNZM, QSO. The Anzac coins do not enter public circulation until March 23, so the students are the first in New Zealand to have these special coins.
On Friday 30th January Prime Minister John Key visited JPC and spoke to the senior Business students. He is photographed here with Rotorua MP Todd McClay and Principal Patrick Walsh.
