Waiariki Trades Academy Success StoryWednesday 29th October saw Waiariki Institute of Technology host the Bay of Plenty Trades Academy prize-giving, recognising all the achievements of the high-school students who have chosen to 'Step ahead'. Here is how three of our students feel about taking part in the popular initiative, aiming to bridge secondary and tertiary study. “I really enjoyed getting the skills to make all the food we prepared. And how friendly everyone was” says Lexie Goeth-Keaney (pictured right) of her hospitality course. With learning alongside students from other high schools a hit aspect for Lexie, she advises “If you are interested in the Trades Academy you should just do it. It is fun, entertaining and really teaches you skills you can use at any point in your life.” For Keegan Jensen (pictured centre), named first in his construction class at the awards ceremony, the Trades Academy brings him one step closer to his goal of studying carpentry at tertiary level and gaining an apprenticeship. “I was always hands-on with my dad in the backyard and my passion for construction has just grown from there. To others I would say definitely look at the Trades Academy. There is a lot of hands on practical training, so you find out what it is like in the real world.” Also inspired by the skills of his father, Alex Korodi (pictured left) embraced the Academy's mechanical engineering course and aims to follow it through into tertiary life. “My tutor was really funny and we got to do a lot of practical and not a lot of theory - that’s what I like.” To those looking to follow in his footsteps he says “Give it a go. Trades Academy is really fun and you get to learn a lot more stuff.” |
